Home School Students
Wildwind Equestrian Center in South Lyon would like to introduce you and your children to English horseback riding. Equestrian sports are truly a sport of a lifetime with children starting as young as 4 and riding into their 70’s. This is not a sport where the kids just hop on a horse and yell yahoo. This is a sport where a 1 hour lesson is equivalent to a 45 minute aerobic workout. At Wildwind the students will not only learn to respect the horses but the other animals and humans in their space.
In our home schooling program, learning about horses will be just as important as the children’s riding lesson. We will cover many diverse topics, depending on the age group. Grooming and saddling, safety, health and nutrition, horse first aid, colors, breeds and more. If you have older students we can teach horse anatomy, wound care, business management, and other more advanced topics. Riders will also be exposed to on-site veterinarians, horse chiropractors and farriers, all with advanced degrees. A certified riding instructor will teach the riding lesson, and a teacher with a Ph.D. in zoology will help with your student's horse studies.

The students will attend classes for an 8 week session for about 1½ hours once a week. There must be at least 3 students to form a class. Cost for the class is $240.00 per student. However if you come to us in an entire home schooling class with 6-12 students, each student will only pay $200.00. Class times are available M-Th from 10:00-3:00 by appointment, and start any time we have a new group. Students must be at least 6 years old and parents are also welcome to join the classes. Students can continue on as long as they like and obtain more advanced skills. Riding helmets will be supplied, and all riders need to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes (no sandals or crocs.)
Our main focus is on teaching and learning, however there will be competive activities available for those that want to participate in riding as a competitive sport although this will not be the focus of our classes. As the students improve, volunteer opportunities are available to help others during summer and weekends.
Talk to the kids, talk to the other parents, or call to schedule a visit, then give us a try. Horseback riding is fun, healthy and educational.
